Why should I carpool? Carpooling will help you save money on petrol by splitting driving costs among two or more commuters. It’s a great opportunity to meet some interesting people whilst being environmentally friendly.
What are my carpooling options? You can carpool with co-workers to work from home, a transit location, day care, or school. Depending on your schedule, you can carpool once a week or every day and share the ride round-trip or just one way.
How do I find people to carpool with? By logging into Yeeha you’ll be able to find other commuters who live and work near you and who have similar work schedules. The service is free to all staff. To get started all you have to do is register, set up your preferences for partners and you’ll be given a list of potential carpool matches. You can access your account anytime, make changes to your commute information and access new matches.
Who does the driving? In some carpools, each carpool member takes turns driving their own vehicle, while in others there is only one driver. There is no hard and fast rule - it is totally dependent upon the individual circumstances of those in your carpool.
What if I don’t have a car? No problem. When you are registering with Yeeha service simply indicate that you want to be a passenger only. Join a carpool that doesn’t need a driver and pay your share of the petrol.
How much should carpool passengers pay? In carpools where driving is equally shared, no money usually changes hands as each member is using their personal vehicle an equal amount of time.
When only one person does the driving, or when there is an unequal split of driving responsibilities, the cost-sharing arrangement should be discussed by those in the carpool. The carpool members are free to base the costs on whatever they decide.
How much will I save by carpooling? If you can share in the cost of commuting to and from work by carpooling with others, your potential savings are significant. The more carpoolers in your group, the more savings you can expect. Sharing a ride with just one other person cuts your approximate daily commute costs by half. The average carpooler can save over $1,000 a year.
Do I have to carpool everyday? No. You can carpool every day, a few days a week, or once a week. Sharing a ride for just two or three days a week will still save you money and stress, reduce traffic congestion, and improve air quality. You and your carpool members decide the schedule. Some people even belong to two carpools -you may carpool with one carpool on Mondays and Wednesdays and then join a second carpool for the remainder of the week.
What do I do if the people that Yeeha matches me with don’t really live that close to me? Yeeha is new. It takes time for people to register and to populate the database. If you don’t find any compatible matches on the first try, come back again in a week or two.
What happens if I'm sick? Call your carpool partner or follow the chain of communication that has been decided upon at your initial meeting. If you're the driver, try to give as much advance warning as possible.
What happens if I oversleep or am late? Being late, or having to wait longer than anticipated, is one of the most common reasons why carpools fail. Just like a bus, carpools work best when they are on a defined schedule. Each carpool should have clearly defined guidelines for how long they will wait.
What if I have a doctor’s appointment or errands to run before, after, or during work? Schedule your errands and appointments on the days you don’t carpool or let your car pool know in advance that you can’t carpool on that day.
What if I have to drive my child to day care or school? If the other members of your carpool don't have similar arrangements, make the day care centre or the school your pick-up and drop-off point. That way you can schedule your pick-up time to correspond to the time when you know your child is happily settled in for the day. Note: If you are going to have a pick-up/drop-off point different than your home address, make sure you enter the origin and destination address of the location where you would like to be picked up and dropped off.
What if I have an emergency or I find out I have to work late? Join a morning-only carpool and take public transit or a later carpool in the evening. Council also has a Guaranteed Ride Home program, providing registered participants with a reliable, emergency ride home on the day.
How do I avoid carpooling with unsafe drivers and/or people who make me uncomfortable? After you receive your match list, e-mail and/or call your possible carpool partners to begin the process of getting to know them. Arrange a meeting in a public place before starting to carpool, and discuss driving safety. If needed, request contact information for personal references, and make sure to exchange emergency contact prior to starting the carpool. Don’t travel with someone you don’t trust. There are plenty of other possible matches available for you.
What if my carpool isn’t working out? If you are going to leave your carpool arrangement or will be on leave for an extended period of time, give ample notice so a replacement can be found. This way there’s no sudden increase in cost for those who remain in the carpool. Go back to Yeeha to find a new carpool partner and try again.
Do I need to change my insurance? Check with your insurance company and make sure your insurance provider covers you in case of an accident. Get acquainted with your policy to ensure that you are properly covered. |
